Our Story

A Blue Lotus in the Mountains

In Sanskrit, utpala means the blue lotus — a flower that grows out of cold, high-altitude water and opens toward the light. It's a fitting name for a house built in the Lahaul Valley, where the Himalayas are at their starkest and the reward for reaching them is exactly that: something calm and unexpected, blooming in the middle of the mountains.

Sissu is not a place you pass through by accident. Until the Atal Tunnel cut a nine-kilometre shortcut beneath the Rohtang range, this valley spent months of the year cut off by snow. Today the tunnel keeps the route open for most of the year, turning what was once a remote expedition into a spectacular drive from Manali — though the mountains still have the final word when the weather turns, which is part of what keeps Sissu wild.

The Property

Eight Rooms, Done Properly

The village itself sits beside the Leh–Manali Highway, a short walk from a lake that mirrors the peaks around it and a waterfall you can hear before you see it. Depending on when you arrive, Sissu is green with early-summer meadows, gold with autumn maples, or entirely white — each season rewriting the same view.

Utpala House was built to meet that landscape halfway: a small, boutique stay of just eight rooms, registered and approved under the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development & Registration Act, 2002, where traditional mountain materials — stone, timber, wood-fired warmth — sit alongside the comforts that make a high-altitude stay easy: centrally heated rooms, hot water on demand, and a cafe, Oven Xpress, that feels more like a friend's living room than a hotel restaurant.

We're not the biggest place in Sissu, and we don't try to be. What we offer instead is a handful of rooms with views that don't need any editing, and the kind of quiet that's hard to find below 3,000 metres.
